Sunita Devi and Jasbir Singh were born and brought up in Balla village of Karnal, Haryana, about 135 km from the country’s capital Delhi. The people living in the village are familiar with each and every villager, Sunita and Jasbir also knew each other. They used to study in the same class in the school. Childhood passed and stepped on the threshold of youth. When friendship turned into love, it is not known. Both of them did not know when this line changed from ‘Jasbir Singh to my village.

Jasbir wanted to become a photographer. He dropped out of school to take photography lessons, but he used to come to the school frequently to meet Sunita. Then he used to go home with Sunita on school holidays. Sometimes he would buy bangles for Sunita and sometimes even colorful dupattas. Humdum sitting while sharing the pain
According to a magazine report, when father Om Prakash came to know about it, he forcibly married his daughter somewhere else. Sunita and Jasbir also considered separation as their fate, but this marriage did not go well even for one and a half years. Heard all kinds of taunts. Fighting is right. Still, married life did not come back on track. Eventually, one day everyone had to leave and come home forever. When 21-year-old Sunita was completely broken. Thoughts of ending life were coming in his mind again and again, at that time Jasbir once again saved him from disintegrating. He extended his hand to get Sunita out of the darkness. Gave his shoulder He cried sitting together first and then made him laugh by saying childish things.

When someone expresses sympathy in sorrow, plays along, then a different corner is created in his heart. Here at some point these two used to be each other’s life, but the village and society had divided them into pieces. This time Jasbir took the stand and Sunita supported him. Both of them fled and got married against family, village and society. Both were a perfect couple, but the only fault was that both were from the same village and belonged to the same caste. Marriage in the same gotra and same caste is prohibited in Haryana.

There was a apprehension of untoward, so left the village
Both of them had an idea of what would be the result of their decision to marry against the society. So Sunita and Jasbir did not return to the village after marriage. Jasbir started living with Sunita at his sister’s house in Machrauli village near Panipat, about 45 km from the village. Both were happy with each other. This decision of Sunita and Jasbir hurt the ego of some elders of the village. Both were not in front, yet they were knocking in their eyes. The villagers believed that boys and girls of the same village and of the same caste are brothers and sisters. Brother and sister cannot get married. The villagers boycotted Sunita’s family. Because of this, both father and brother became enemies of their lives.

Announced with difference of father
According to the report of the English news agency Reuters, it is May 9, 2008. At that time Sunita was about 6 months pregnant. Early in the morning, Sunita tried to wake Jasbir in a frightened voice. Then someone kicked Jasbir and picked him up. Dragging both of them in the car and then brutally killed both of them. After this the bodies of both were thrown in the dirt outside Sunita’s house so that the youth of the village could take lessons and then no one would bother to love like them. During this a message was given that the honor of the family has been regained by killing both of them. Sunita’s father Om Prakash declared with great distinction, ‘Look, this is the result of those who love.’

Celebration of murder, police reluctant to take action
The whole village celebrated the killing of Sunita and Jasbir. Village Sarpanch Ranveer Singh Mann announced that the entire village has helped the family in this noble cause. The murderers were Jats, so even the police were reluctant to take action. None of the accused was arrested for four days. Later, under pressure from several organizations, the police arrested 5 people including Sunita’s father Om Prakash and uncle.

Father said – yes killed, mother said – she got punishment for her deeds
According to the police, Om Prakash confessed to killing his pregnant daughter and her husband. The father said, ‘Yes, we killed both of them. I’m not ashamed of it. If we don’t do this then how can we show our face in the village. He did wrong, so we have taken this real man’s vow, so I have no regrets at all.’

Jasbir’s family drowned in grief and panic
Panic along with sadness engulfed Jasbir’s house for several months. Jasbir’s family members were not even talking to the media out of fear. He was being intimidated to withdraw the case. A police constable from Balla police outpost said on condition of anonymity that the villagers were pressurizing the police and Jasbir’s family to quash the case.

Jasbir’s sister Neelam told that brutally killed my brother and sister-in-law. Didn’t even give us a chance to cry. On the contrary, we are being pressured to withdraw the case by intimidation. Threats are being made that if the case is not withdrawn, we will have the same fate as both of them. However, an arrest was made in this case. The matter also reached the court, but years passed, Jasbir and Sunita did not get justice.
