nagarathna: Teach Our Boys To Respect Women: Justice Nagarathna | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: There is so much crime in the society because some parents and teachers failed to teach young boys how they should deal with young girls, Supreme Court Justice B V Nagarathna said here on Saturday.
“Respect for women, being an important value in society, has to be inculcated in the minds of young boys, as this would go a long way in securing the safety of women in the country,” she said while addressing graduates during the 33rd convocation ceremony at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women.
Nagarathna advised teachers to educate parents, guardians and young boys to treat girls and boys equally. “Gender roles can no longer be stereotyped,” she said.
The judge also spoke about the safety and security of girls, women and older women. “Girls should realise and understand what it is to be safe in the household and outside the household. Likewise, the importance of safety and security can only be felt if it is really there and not illusory. Girls and young women have to be taught how they should treat men and care for them as and when the situation demands. Education and financial independence of women must foster family life, resulting in providing the best atmosphere for a child to grow into a good citizen.”
While the number of educational institutions is increasing each day, it is important to understand whether education imparted by the institutions meets the societal needs by producing individuals equipped to meet the challenges of the society and the professional world they are stepping into, Nagarathna said. She also spoke in detail on the ‘Role of Education in Nation Building.’
“The need of maintain a clean environment, importance of forests, wildlife, lakes, rivers and sustaining a balance in ecology must be taught to children at a young age,” she added.
As many as 2,734 students were conferred degrees. The institution’s chancellor SP Thyagarajan and vice-chancellor V Bharathi Harishankar were present.
