In 10 Yrs, Msu Pays ₹9cr Aid To Over 20k Students | Vadodara News – Times of India

Vadodara: More than 20,000 students have benefited from MS University’s welfare scheme for poor students in a decade, which had been launched in 2012.
The first university in Gujarat to have initiated such a scheme for students based on their economic status, MSU has granted financial support to the tune of Rs 9 crore so far.
In the first year of its launch, the publicly-funded university had granted scholarships to the tune of Rs 4.68 lakh to 138 student beneficiaries, for which a seed capital of Rs 5 lakh was collected.
This time, in the academic year 2021-22, a total of 2,121 students have benefited as a scholarship to the tune of Rs Rs 98.76 lakh has been sanctioned.
“This is the highest ever disbursement since our university rolled out the scheme,” said prof Rameshwari Pandyadirector of the directorate of students welfare (DSW), adding that of the 2,121 students, 1,306 are boys whereas the rest 815 are girl students.
This time, applications were also invited from students who lost their earning parent/s during the Covid-19 induced pandemic. “We have granted a full refund of fees to 49 such students during this academic year,” she said.
Of the total beneficiaries, 85% of students are enrolled in grant-in-aid programmes, while 15 % are enrolled in higher payment programmes or self-financed courses.
The highest number of beneficiaries are from the faculty of commerce, where 788 students have been sanctioned scholarships to the tune of Rs 28.22 lakh.
This is followed by the faculty of science where 347 students have bagged Rs 15.07 lakh worth of scholarship and another 331 students of faculty of technology and engineering who have bagged a scholarship to the tune of Rs 15.84 lakh.
DSW scrutinizes the applications that it receives from students. Earlier, those students whose family income was Rs 2.5 lakh per annum were eligible to apply for the scholarship. “For the past three years, we have increased this cap to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum,” said Pandya.
It is worth mentioning here that the university provides a full waiver of fees to temporary non-teaching staff members, whose kids are enrolled in Experimental School and Chetan Balwadithe two schools located on the campus under the scheme.
