Expert Reveals 5 Best Foods for an Ageing Brain: Take a Look

Have you ever misplaced your keys or overlooked a bill payment? If so, these are fairly common, as most of us start forgetting things as we age. Needless to say, brain health is an important topic that is increasingly important to our well-being. Our brain, as the control centre of our body, plays an important role, and it, like our body, ages over time. There are, however, several ways to keep the brain healthy. Focusing on good nutrition is one of the most important ways to care for the brain.

Dr Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist, shared a few food items that are best for an ageing brain. Let us take a look:

In her Instagram post, she has beautifully explained how you can optimize your brain ageing through diet. “Looking for the fountain of youth for your brain? Start including these foods in your diet to work towards a healthier brain and fight off many of the ways our brain can get hurt over time, including free radicals, decreased blood flow, and more,” she wrote.

According to her, there are five best foods for an ageing brain that you must know:

  1. Evoo or Extra virgin olive oil: Dr Naidoo believes that extra virgin olive oil is linked to a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s because it increases autophagy in brain cells. For a “brain-healthy” salad dressing, she suggests combining it with dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar.
  2. Spices: According to Dr Naidoo, turmeric with a pinch of black pepper, cinnamon, saffron, rosemary and ginger will help you promote healthy brain ageing and memory.
  3. OMEGA-3: “EPA and DHA are omega 3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like wild-caught salmon that help to protect the brain from ageing,” she added. ALA, the omega 3 found in plant sources, like nuts and seeds, can be converted to EPA and DHA in small amounts.
  4. Leafy greens: Dietitians and experts frequently recommend eating leafy vegetables because they are high in folate, one of the most important vitamins for brain health. Dr Naidoo, in her post, also recommends vegetables such as spinach, swiss chard, arigula, and dandelion greens. She claims that eating these vegetables will help you maintain cognitive integrity as you get older.
  5. Rainbow Veggies: Different coloured plant foods are said to contain different brain-healthy nutrients and fibre. Dr Uma Naidoo has also suggested including plant-based diets in our meals to improve our cognitive longevity.
