Cow vigilante Bittu Bajrangi’s younger brother was set on fire by four unidentified attackers in Haryana’s Faridabad on Wednesday night, police said. The incident took place near Baba Mandi in Faridabad when unknown assailants sprinkled petrol on 32-year-old Mahesh Panchal and set him on fire. He sustained 60% burn injuries and is fighting for his life at a private hospital.

Mahesh Panchal is the brother of Bajrangi, a cow vigilante and a Bajrang Dal member, who was arrested in connection with the communal violence that took place in Haryana’s Nuh earlier this year in August. Bajrangi was arrested in connection with the violence in Nuh and Gurugram that claimed the lives of at least six people.

In response to the attack on his brother, Bajrangi warned that if the police do not arrest the culprits soon, he will take matters into his own hands.

Police said that attackers confirmed Panchal’s relation with Bajrangi before setting him on fire. “When my brother confirmed that, they poured petrol on him and set him on fire and fled from the spot,” Bajrangi was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.

According to police, the attackers fled in a car and the investigators were scouring CCTV footage of the area to identify them. A case has been registered against the unknown assailants.

According to a Hindustan Times report, Assistant Police Commissioner (crime) Aman Yadav said Panchal rushed inside his house where his family members extinguished the fire and rushed him to a local hospital. He was then referred to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.
