2 Boys With Rare Moyamoya Disorder Get New Lease Of Life | Vadodara News – Times of India

Vadodara: Two children, one from Vadodara and another from Dakor, suffering from the rare moyamoya disorder will live a normal life.
They have undergone encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) surgery that was conducted for the first time at state-run SSG Hospital in Vadodara, said medical superintendent Dr Ranjan Aiyer.
Moyamoya is a rare blood vessel (vascular) disorder in which the carotid artery in the skull becomes blocked or narrowed, reducing blood flow to the brain. About 3-5 children in a population of one lakh suffer from this congenital disorder, doctors said.
The kids — Mohammed Arfan Sheikh (5.5 years) from Dakor and Mohammed Hassan Pathan (8) from Vadodara’s Yakutpura area — were suffering from convulsions due to their medical condition.
“In children, the first symptom is usually recurrent ischemic attack or at times even stroke. Spotting symptoms early is very important to prevent serious complications such as stroke,” said neurosurgeon Dr Yaksh Sompuraassistant professor, who was part of the team from the neurosurgery department led by the head of department Dr Amey Patankar that conducted the delicate surgery.
The neurosurgery team included Dr Parth Modi, Dr Bhagyashree Deshmankar, Dr Nalin Prajapati, Dr Kunj Shah while Dr Vasava and Dr Jyotsna Maliwad were part of the anaesthesia team.
The team of neurosurgeons treated the disorder by bypassing the narrowed arteries and creating a new blood supply for the affected areas of the brain.
“It was a delicate procedure that continued for 5-6 hours at a stretch. Since the symptoms were on the right side of the brain, we operated on the left side. After 3-6 months, we will again operate upon them for the opposite side,” said Sompura.
“We will repeat angiography after six months,” he said, adding that if left untreated the condition can lead to bleeding in the brain, affect brain functions and cause disabilities.
The children’s families said that before approaching the public hospital, they had knocked on doors of private hospitals where the surgery was a costly affair running into Rs 5-6 lakh.
At SSG Hospital, the surgery has been performed at a minimal charge of Rs 7,000.
