The incident took place in Salboni where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend a party function today. A large number of police forces have been sent to the spot to control the situation.

Attack while returning from campaign
Abhishek Banerjee was doing a road show in Binpur and Gopiballavpur of Jhargram due to a campaign. After the rally, he was passing through Salboni when members of the Kurmi community gathered on both sides of the road, protesting their demand for ST status.

As Abhishek’s car moved ahead, the protesters started throwing stones at the convoy. Abhishek’s car passed away but Hansda’s vehicle in the convoy got damaged. Officials said that a large number of police forces have been sent to the spot to control the situation.

Abhishek told BJP’s hand behind the attack
Abhishek Banerjee has told the hand of BJP behind the attack. He said, “I support democratic protest. If anyone wants to come and speak to me, they are always free to do so, but what kind of protest is it that you are throwing stones, beating people and vandalizing vehicles?”

Addressing a party program late at night, he said, “I believe some BJP miscreants disguised as members of the Kurmi community are behind this attack to malign TMC’s campaign.”

48-hour ultimatum to Kurmi community leaders
Abhishek also sought a statement from the Kurmi community leaders regarding the attack within 48 hours. He said, “I am giving an ultimatum of 48 hours to the leaders of the Kurmi community.

They should tell if they were behind this incident. If they don’t make a statement, it will be proved that they were behind it, and then the law will take action. Banerjee asked TMC workers to maintain peace and not succumb to any provocation.

BJP leader’s house was ransacked last week
Last week, the house of BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh at Kharagpur in West Medinipur was vandalized allegedly by members of a Kurmi organization over his comments against the community. Ghosh said, “TMC is fueling this movement. When my house was attacked, they did not act on it. Now they are becoming victims of it.

What is the demand of Kurmi community
The leaders of the Kurmi community argue that the community was included in the list of STs in the year 1931 during the British period. This status continued till the year 1950. In the new list that came after that, he was removed from ST and put in the list of Other Backward Castes (OBC). The votes of this society are decisive in 30 assembly seats and four seats in the Lok Sabha in the state.

11 tribes in Bengal are also demanding ST status
The 11 tribes of the Gorkha community living in the Darjeeling hill region in the state have also been demanding ST status for a long time. These include Gurung, Mangar, Rai, Sunwar, Mukhiya, Jogi, Thami, Yakha, Bahun, Chhetri and Newar. Seven of the 18 tribes of the Gorkha community got ST status after independence, but 11 are still waiting for it.
