Varanasi court will deliver important verdict in Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri dispute today. The district court will decide whether to hear the petition seeking permission to worship at the Shringar Gauri temple located on the premises of the Gyanvapi Masjid. Varanasi District Judge AK Vishvesh had reserved the verdict till September 12 after the hearing held last month.

In view of the court’s order in this case, which is considered very sensitive, Section 144 has been implemented in the surrounding areas. Police force has been deployed in the area having mixed Hindu-Muslim population in the city. Police have increased patrolling in some areas since last night so that the law and order situation does not deteriorate after the order.

What is the case related to Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri?
Five Hindu women have sought permission to worship Hindu deities present in the Gyanvapi mosque premises. These women especially sought permission to worship Shringar Gauri every day. A survey was also done in the mosque on the orders of the court. After the survey, the Hindu side claimed that the Shivling is present in the basement of the mosque, while the Muslim side had told it to be a fountain. What happened in the case so far, understand in 3 points…

  • On August 18, 2021, 5 women had reached the court in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex, seeking permission for daily worship of Goddesses including Maa Shringar Gauri, Ganesh ji, Hanuman ji and other deities present in the premises. Right now worship is held here only once in a year.
  • These five petitioners are being led by Rakhi Singh from Delhi, the remaining four women are Sita Sahu, Manju Vyas, Lakshmi Devi and Rekha Pathak from Banaras.
  • On 26 April 2022, the Varanasi Civil Court had ordered videography and survey for verification of Shringar Gauri and other deities in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex.

Argument of Hindus: Aurangzeb broke the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque

  • It is believed that in 1669, Aurangzeb broke a part of the Kashi Vishwanath temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque. Some historians say that in the 14th century, the Sharqi Sultan of Jaunpur had demolished the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque.
  • According to some beliefs, the Vishwanath temple and the Gyanvapi mosque were built by Akbar in 1585 under the new religion Din-e-Ilahi.
  • Between the mosque and Vishwanath temple there is a 10 feet deep well, which is called Gyanvapi. The mosque got its name after this well. It is said in Skanda Purana that Lord Shiva himself had made this well for Lingabhishek with his trident.
  • It was here that Shiva had imparted knowledge to his wife Parvati, hence the name of this place Gyanvapi or the well of knowledge. This well is directly related to the mythological period in the legends, beliefs of common people.

Argument of Muslim side: This waqf property, name Shahi Masjid Alamgir

  • The counter-arguments of the Masajid Committee are continuing since August 22. The Muslim side said that the Waqf Board was formed in the year 1936. It was revealed in the Gazette of the year 1944 that the name of Gyanvapi Masjid is Shahi Masjid Alamgir.
  • The property belonged to Emperor Alamgir i.e. Aurangzeb. Badshah Alamgir’s name was also recorded as a waqf performer. In this way, the mosque was built in the year 1669 on the property donated (donated) by Emperor Aurangzeb under the 1400-year-old Sharai law and since then till today Namaz is being offered there.
  • Apart from this, when the settlement came into force during the British rule in 1883-84, survey was done and Araji number was made. It was also shown in Araji number 9130 at that time that there is a mosque, a grave, a graveyard, a tomb, a well. Even in the old cases it has been decided that the Gyanvapi Masjid is the property of the Waqf.
  • The government also considers it to be a Waqf property, that is why the mosque was not taken into account in the Kashi Vishwanath Act. In the year 2021, the land was exchanged between the mosque and the temple management, that too assuming it to be a Waqf property. Therefore, the case of Maa Shringar Gauri is not maintainable in the civil court.

‘I had heard a thing in my childhood. When a pigeon sees a cat, it knows that the cat will eat it. Cats find pigeon very tasty. The pigeon is so naive and innocent that he thinks that if I close the eyes, the cat will not be seen. In this way the cat eats it. To maintain religious places as in 1947, means to turn a blind eye to a cat like a pigeon.’ This was stated by BJP leader Uma Bharti during the debate on The Places of Worship Bill (Places of Worship Bill) in the Lok Sabha on 9 September 1991.
