Social media company Twitter has been accused of defrauding users and federal regulators. In a complaint to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, it has been said that Twitter provided false information about the security of people’s personal data.
Former Twitter security chief Peter Jatko has testified as a whistleblower, claiming that Twitter has underestimated the number of automated bots on its platform. It is believed that Elon Musk can benefit greatly from this claim of Jatco, as Musk has accused Twitter of giving false information about bots.
CNN quoted Jatko’s revelations as accusing Twitter of negligence, willful ignorance and accusing it of being a threat to national security and democracy. Jatko was fired for poor performance earlier this year.
Jatco has warned officials (US officials and the company’s board of directors) seeking to hide obsolete servers, software vulnerable to computer attacks and a number of hacking attempts. According to the report, hacker-turned-executive Jatko, also known by the nickname Muje, claimed that Twitter prioritizes growing its user base rather than fighting spam and bots.
According to a report in a leading US newspaper, he had accused the company’s CEO Parag Agarwal of lying in May. Agarwal then dismissed the allegations, saying that Twitter strongly encourages spam detection and removal as much as possible.
A company spokesperson said on Tuesday that Jatco was fired in January this year due to ineffective leadership and poor performance. “What we have observed so far is that there is a false narrative about Twitter and our privacy and data security that is fraught with inconsistencies and inaccuracies,” the spokesperson said in a statement. This narrative lacks important context.
