Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin urges PM Modi to add Narikuravars on ST list | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Saturday requested prime minister Narendra Modi to include Narikovaran tribals, grouped with the Kuruvikaran communityon the scheduled tribes list expeditiously.
In his letter to the prime minister, Stalin said the Narikoravans constitute one of the most deprived and vulnerable communities in Tamil Nadu and therefore deserve all constitutional protection and welfare measures envisaged by the inclusion in the ST list.
The CM pointed out that based on the recommendations of the government of Tamil Nadu, the director of the ministry of tribal affairs had informed that the registrar general of India had also agreed to the proposal for the inclusion of the Narikoravan community on the ST list.
Further, expert bodies like the Lokur Committee and the Joint Committee of Parliament have also recommended the inclusion of the community in the years 1965 and 1967 respectively.
“Though this has been the case and several representations have been made in this regard, the inclusion of the community in the list is pending for a very long time,” he said.
