‘Surat Nu Jaman’ Is 11th In India | Surat News – Times of India

Surat: The Diamond City has ranked 11th in the recent ‘Eat Smart Cities Challenge’ (ESCC) among 108 cities in the country. Surat was placed among top 20 cities in the final round but could not make it to the top 10.
The competition was organsied by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), New Delhi, and ministry of housing and urban affairs (MOHUA).
The rankings have surprised many in the city, as in cleanliness the city ranks among the top five in the country for the past couple of decades.
In the competition, the cities were tested for safe, secure and healthy practices for the food distribution system. The city is ranked based on its performance in five activities. Among the activities, licence, registration and surveillance make the first parameter. During the drive, 6,289 food outlets were covered and six special surveillance drives were held by the health teams of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
Benchmark and certification is the second parameter in which cleanliness and certifications of places of eating were examined. Clean street food hubs, fresh fruit and vegetable markets and religious places were issued certificates after examination by the food department. A total 206 places were given rating and 1,154 food businesses were given fast track training. Changing food settings was the activity in which 62 schools were covered and registered under the ‘eat right’ campaign. In the activity of creating a sustainable food environment, 22 places were examined where people were offered food at affordable prices. The fifth activity was mass mobilisation in which adulteration camps and awareness were held at 17 places offering food.
