Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday said his government will withdraw cases against those who took part in protests, including on the Chennai-Salem highway, the Kudankulam nuclear power plant and hydrocarbon extraction in the delta region.

Stalin underlined that his intention was to uphold laws protecting freedom of expression while making the declaration in the assembly.

Stalin said, “Arignar Anna (CN Annadurai-the first DMK Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu) Justice was the progress of the party, and M Karunanidhi was Anna’s profession, and I am Karunanidhi’s progress.”

Stalin also announced the establishment of the new and the renovation of the old – Samathuvpuram (Center for maintaining fraternity and social equality), industrial estates in northern Tamil Nadu, and an allocation of Rs 100 crore for the reconstruction of temples.

The move can be seen as the party’s commitment to support the protests by targeting the then AIADMK government. Hydrocarbon extraction protests at Neduvasal and Kathiramangalam in central Tamil Nadu, and the Sterlite Copper protest in May 2018 were the major protests supported by the DMK.
