Around 150 BJP workers on Thursday flocked to the TMC in Bengal’s Birbhum district after local leaders of the ruling party sprayed sanitizers on them.
Dulal Roy, a block-level member of the Mamata Banerjee-led party, said a stage was set up in Ilambazar area where saffron camp workers were “sanitised”, following which local leaders handed over the TMC flag to them.
He said, “People working for BJP were infected with the virus. Before taking them back, we had to make sure that it is our target to get rid of the virus.”
However, district BJP president Dhruba Saha claimed that her party workers were “forced” to join the TMC. “No one has voluntarily entered the TMC from the BJP,” he said.
Saha further said that local TMC leaders, to avoid allegations of post-poll violence, were organizing such events and “forcing” BJP workers to join their party. “Thousands of workers are still with us, protesting TMC’s torture,” the BJP leader said.
Two days ago, in Hooghly district, another group of 200 BJP workers, queuing to join the Trinamool Congress, had to shave their heads to “atone for the sin” of joining the saffron party ahead of the assembly elections.
