The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting is going to start shortly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached the summit center to attend the meeting. Issues related to reform and expansion of SCO, regional security, cooperation, strengthening connectivity and promoting trade will be discussed in the meeting. After this, the documents related to the Samarkand meeting will be signed.

PM Modi reached Samarkand on the night of 15 September. Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev today. In the evening the PM will leave for New Delhi.

Will talk to Putin on Russia-Ukraine war and unhindered supply of crude oil Modi
In PM Modi’s meeting with Putin, both the leaders will discuss important issues like Russia-Ukraine war and food security. According to a statement issued by Russia, issues related to strategic stability, the situation in the Asia-Pacific region will be discussed. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told that PM Modi can talk to Putin about the supply of cheap crude oil without any hindrance.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to Delhi Denis Alipov on Thursday said that crude oil supplies to India will continue. It will touch a new record this year. India needs cheap oil, while Russia needs a new market.

Jinping will meet with Iranian President Reisi
After the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold talks with Iranian President Reisi. This will be the first meeting of the two. Earlier, Jinping met with Russian President Putin. The two leaders met for the first time since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war.

India joined SCO in 2017

SCO i.e. Shanghai Cooperation Organization was formed in 2001. SCO is a political, economic and security organization. It has total 8 permanent members including India, Russia, China and Pakistan. Initially, the SCO had six members – Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. With the joining of India and Pakistan in 2017, the number of its permanent members increased to 8. 6 countries- Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey are the dialogue partners of SCO. 4 countries- Afghanistan, Iran, Belarus and Mongolia are its observer members.
