In Pyaar Ka Postmortem Series-7, today the story is of Jaswinder Kaur aka Jassi from Canada and Sukhwinder Singh aka Mittu from Punjab. Both fell in love at first sight. Jassi’s mother wanted to marry her daughter in a big family, but the daughter fled from Canada and made Mittu a companion. When the mother sitting in Canada came to know, she conspired to kill the daughter and son-in-law living in Punjab. Jassi is no more. Mitthu survived, who has been fighting for justice for 21 years. Read his story…

It is November 1994. Mittu was standing at the Kamal Chowk tempo stand of Jagraon with a friend on his way home. Then he saw a beautiful girl coming from afar. Fair complexion, big eyes and tall stature. His eyes stopped. That girl was none other than Jaswinder Kaur aka Jassi. Jassi had come to her maternal grandmother from Canada. He was accompanied by mother Malkit and maternal uncle. Jassi sat in the tempo with her mother and maternal uncle. Mithu and his friend also hanged behind the tempo. The destination of both was Kaunke Khosa village. Kabaddi player Mitthu was a boy from an ordinary family, while Jassi was the daughter of an influential family. She was doing a beautician course.

Mittu told in an interview, ‘The back door of the luxurious cottage of Jassi’s maternal house used to open towards my two-room kutcha house. The free-spirited Jassi, unaware of the rules of Punjab, drove himself in front of my house the next day on a scooter. Jassi’s scooter stopped. She started shouting help-help. I came out and started the scooter. Gathering courage, he said softly- ‘Main gall karni mangda… (I want to talk).’ He said ‘yes’ in response. Along with going, promised to meet in Jagraon the next day.

Oy Mitran, this match was won in just one move.
Mitthu recalls, ‘The next day I went to Jagraon with the family for shopping. His mother and aunt were also doing some shopping at the same showroom. I sat behind Jessie. She was drinking the copy. He secretly extended the cup towards me. We smiled at each other, but there was no talk between us. Returned to the village in the evening.

Before entering the house, Jassi looked around and put a slip in Mittu’s hand. She entered the house running herself. After he left, Mithu read the slip. The slip read – ‘I love you.’ Mittu’s happiness knew no bounds after reading this. When Mitthu told the friend, he congratulated him and said- ‘Oye Mitran, you have won the match in just one move.’

Seeing Mittu sad, Jassi tore her passport
According to Mittu, both of us started meeting at a neighboring house. A week later, Jassi said – she is returning to Canada. Mittu’s heart sank. Jassi didn’t even want to leave. So Jassi tore his passport. He had to stay for 15 more days as he did not have a passport. Jassi was smart in reading. His dream was to become a lawyer in Canada. She wanted to get married and spend life with me. Often used to talk about living together with a separate house in Canada.

Mittu’s English was weak and Jassi spoke broken Punjabi
Jassi’s passport was made. After 15 days she returned to Canada. When Jassi was about to leave, Mittu asked – If you go away then how will the conversation happen?’ She took the number of a PCO of Jagraon. Went by fixing the day and time to call. Jassi reached Canada and called on time. Both had a conversation. A long series of letters also went on.

Jassi used to write in English. Mittu knew little of English. That’s why he used to get letters read from his friends. Their love blossomed through letters and telephones. Every year for some time Jassi would come to her maternal grandmother’s house, then the two would meet.

Mittu and Jassi’s love story had completed 5 years. In the year 1999, Jassi’s mother Malkit and maternal uncle Badesha started talking about her relationship in a big family. Jassi protests, but she doesn’t tell that she loves Mittu. Jassi knew that Mithu is from middle class, so his mother will not accept this relationship. Jassi decides to marry Mittu. When Nanihal came on vacation, she expressed her decision to get married in front of Mittu.

Got married in Gurudwara, promised to tell at the right time
Mittu was aware of some issues, but he asked- ‘Suddenly like this? I will talk to your mother.’ Jassi said- ‘No Mitthu, you do not know my mother. My mother does what my uncle tells me to do. Mama is trying to get me married to someone else for the benefit of her business. Here it is a matter of big family, wealth and power, we have to get married. Asked Mitthu- ‘Tell me your mind, do you love me? Will you marry?’

Jassi and Mittu got married in Amritsar Gurdwara. Jassi said – when the right time comes, she will tell everyone in Canada. Do not tell anyone about the marriage till you will convince the mother.

Painful twist in love story
In Canada, mother and maternal uncle put more pressure on Jassi for marriage. When the mother did not agree to listen to him, she told about her marriage. He even applied to invite me to Canada. It was just then that Jassi’s bad days have come. Jassi was beaten up. He was imprisoned in the house.

Mama Badesha advised, ‘What gully has come to Punjab, what will Canada know here. Let’s get it married. The wedding preparations were going on in the house. Jassi would sometimes protest by screaming from the room and sometimes plead in front of her mother, but everything was ignored.

Jassi ran from Canada for Mittu, bid in court – did not sin
It is May 2000. Jassi learns that his maternal uncle has trapped Mittu and his friends by using his influence. A case was registered against them for kidnapping Jassi and forcibly getting married. Jassi somehow escaped from her house and reached Punjab. Appeared in court here and recorded her statement. The statement said- ‘Both of us are 24-25 years old. We have married of our own free will and marrying with will is not a crime. The court acquitted Mittu and his friends. Both of them started living secretly with their relatives. They feared that they might be attacked.

Mother said- don’t worry, I will explain to everyone.
On the other hand, mother and maternal uncle decided to teach a lesson to the daughter. Badesha and Malkit used their contacts while staying in Canada. Wasted money like water and conspired to kill Mittu. With the help of Inspector Joginder, the betel nut killer was hired in the Punjab Police. On June 7, Malkit from Canada somehow spoke to Jassi on the phone. Speak on the phone-Oh son, what did you do? Let’s go, it’s okay. Now what is your joy, is ours. You did what you wanted, Jassi. Now let us do what we want. I had big dreams of your wedding. I am coming to the village. I will explain to everyone. Don’t worry, Mittu and I will get you married legally. We also had our nose left in the community. You come, son.

After talking to the mother, Jassi said- ‘People have shaded their mother’s cold, look, finally the mother agreed. Mittu, now our marriage will be like any other. On June 12, a reception was held in the village. On June 8, 2000, both went to the market. Drink coffee Jassi bought colorful bangles, lipsticks, earrings and gajras. While returning, he was attacked with sword and rod on the way. Jassi also got a rod. Mittu was continuously attacked. Jassi screamed – don’t kill her, let her go. Jassi fainted while screaming. After some time, the attackers hit Mittu with the feet, when there was no movement, they assumed him dead and threw him in a nearby drain. Jassi was taken to a farm house near Bula village in Ludhiana.

The attackers confessed their crime, stating that when Jassi regained consciousness. The attackers got Malkit to speak on the phone. Malkit quote- ‘Now you come son. Let bygones be bygones. You have made a mistake. We rectified the mistake. Now everything is as before. Jassi screamed- ‘You have cheated mother, I will tell the police, the media and the law. I will show your disgusting face to everyone. From there, Badsha ordered – make this also silent. The miscreants also slit the throat of Jassi. Knife all over the body several times and threw the dead body in the drain.

The long battle of murder, investigation and justice
Mitthu did not die in the attack. People passing by took him to the hospital. For many days he struggled with life and death. On finding Jassi’s body, the police contacted Malkit and Badesha for identification, they refused to recognize the body. When Mithu regained consciousness, he narrated the whole story.

Mittu fought a long battle for justice for Jassi. Jassi’s family members implicated Mithu in many false cases including rape by using money power. However, he fought and was acquitted. Mittu claims that in the year 2012, through an MLA, Jassi’s family members tried to compromise. In lieu of withdrawing the case, 14 acres of land and Rs 1 crore were offered.
