‘Pressure for conversion’ school, teenage suicide on the rise in Tamil Nadu

The controversy over the suicide of a 16-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu is growing. Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the person who had taken the video of the Class XII student to appear before the investigating officer. The High Court also asked to submit the phone for forensic examination.

Police in Thanjavur are currently investigating the suicide of the girl. It is claimed that a video (Hindustan Times Bangla did not verify the truth) was taken before his death. In the video, the teenager is heard saying that her school warden proposed to her parents two years ago, hoping for a free education. In the video, a man is heard saying to a teenager, “Did the school warden harass him for not agreeing to convert?” The teenager was heard to say, ‘Maybe’.

The girl’s father claimed that his daughter was being pressured to convert to Christianity. Torture was being carried out. Then the girl committed suicide. The girl’s father has also accused the police of putting pressure on her. In that situation, he approached the High Court seeking a CBI inquiry.

In his judgment in the case on Monday, Justice GR Swaminathan said the father and mother of the deceased teenager had confirmed the conversion. The investigating officer also told the court that the voice that was heard in the video that was spread on social media was that of the teenager. The judge said, “In other words, the authenticity of this video has gone beyond controversy. But that is not enough. Need to do proper forensic examination. So it is necessary to record the video on the mobile phone. The person who took the video has been asked by the High Court to appear on Tuesday. The Tamil Nadu Forensic Science Lab in Chennai has been directed to prepare a mobile forensic report by January 28. Which will have to be submitted to the High Court at the next hearing of the case (January 26).

Meanwhile, the political turmoil has started with the whole incident. The BJP and several pro-Hindu groups have been vocal in their protest against the forcible conversion after the video went viral. The claim has been raised in the CBI investigation. Trending on Twitter too. BJP leader H Raja claimed that the teenager got 479 marks out of 500 in the 10th class board examination. ‘They (school) went to (teenager’s) house three times. It was rumored that free education would be provided in case of conversion. But the BJP leader alleged that the girl was forced to clean the toilets and classrooms as she did not agree to convert.

The Congress claims that the school has 60 per cent Hindu, five per cent Muslim and 25 per cent Christian students. There has been no conversion in schools in the last three centuries. Why now? The Congress has fired at the BJP for saying that Tamil Nadu does not believe in such hate politics. State Education Minister Ambil Mahesh Poyamojhi said Tamil Nadu was not in favor of political, religious and caste divisions in schools. He also pleaded not to politicize the issue.
