Parent stabs teacher at school in southern town of Hura

A parent stabbed a teacher at a school in the southern town of Hura on Thursday morning.

According to reports, the attacker fled the scene after stabbing the educator at the Al-Hayat High School.

The Walla news site said the teacher was lightly wounded and able to seek medical care on his own.

The report said the teacher was stabbed as students were entering classrooms, causing many of them to flee the school in panic.

Preliminary investigations found that the stabbing was likely linked to a family dispute.

There have been at least three recent shooting attacks on educators.

Last month a school principal was shot and injured in the northern city of Arraba.

In August, Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Biton’s adviser on Arab affairs, Sahar Ismail, 50, was shot dead just outside his home.

Last year Khatam Abu Qeider, an award-winning principal of an elementary school in the south of the country, was shot and moderately wounded.

Arab communities have seen a surge in violence in recent years, driven mainly, but not only, by organized crime. Arab Israelis blame police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely ignore the violence, which includes family feuds, mafia turf wars and violence against women.

The community has also suffered from decades of neglect. In August, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that violence and crime in Arab Israeli communities was a “national calamity” and in October warned that “we are losing the country.”
