New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reviewed on Tuesday Infosys Frequent technical glitches in the new income tax e-filing portal.
Sitharaman, along with Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj, CBDT Chairman Jagannath Mohapatra and other senior ministry officials, went on point with Infosys officials on the issues facing the new portal – the vendor that developed the site.
While there was no official word on what happened at the meeting, a statement issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) said that “technical glitches will be addressed expeditiously”.
Representatives of ICAI attended the meeting held on Tuesday.
The portal, which was launched on June 7, faced several glitches including long logging in, inability to generate OTP for Aadhaar verification, non-availability of ITR from previous years.
Several stakeholders have submitted written inputs highlighting the areas that need to be rectified along with the problems faced by the portal.
Stakeholders have also highlighted weak user interface, inability to view outdated demand, complaints and information orders as issues that need to be fixed.
In a statement issued after the meeting, ICAI said it has been asked to provide its continued support and inputs to CBDT and Infosys to resolve the issues at the earliest.
“The Income Tax Department stated that the objective of the new portal is to make compliance more taxpayer friendly, however technical glitches will be rectified expeditiously for the convenience of all,” the ICAI statement said.
The e-filing portal www.incometax.gov.in was launched on June 7, which the tax department as well as the government said was aimed at making compliance more taxpayer-friendly.
This is the portal which will also be used by the common income taxpayers to file their annual return for the assessment year 2021-22 for income earned in the financial year 2020-21. The last date for filing such returns by individual taxpayers is September 30.
At the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Saturday, Infosys said it is working to resolve the issues and has already succeeded on some fronts.
Addressing shareholders’ queries on the matter, Infosys said it is deeply concerned by the inconvenience caused due to technical glitches in the new income tax e-filing portal, and that it is working to resolve all issues at the earliest. is.
“Infosys is working to address the concerns in the new income tax e-filing portal. For the past week, several technical glitches affecting performance and stability have been fixed. And as a result, we saw millions The portal has unique daily users,” Infosys Chief Operating Officer Pravin Rao said while answering queries during the AGM.
Responding to a query from a shareholder, Rao said that around one lakh income tax returns have been filed on the portal so far.
Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with Infosys, Finance Ministry On June 16, the government had invited written representations from stakeholders regarding any discrepancies or issues encountered on the new income tax e-filing portal.
Tax consultants have submitted their representations related to technical and performance issues, missing data issues, modules not working.
Some advisors have also suggested that the old e-filing portal should remain active till the new portal becomes stable and in the meantime beta testing be done to resolve the problems faced by the users.
Infosys was awarded a contract in 2019 to develop the next generation income tax filing system to reduce processing time from 63 days to one day and expedite refunds.
On June 8, Sitharaman herself had asked Infosys and its chairman Nandan Nilekani To remove technical flaws.
A day after the launch of the new portal, social media users had informed the Finance Minister about the glitches in the new e-filing portal.
After that, Sitharaman took to Twitter and asked Infosys and its chairman to fix the problem.
Responding to the tweet, Nilekani had said that Infosys is working to plug the loopholes.
