Nintendo Switch 2 was reportedly demoed to some partner developers at Gamescom this year, a new Eurogamer report suggests. Here’s what we know.
Nintendo’s ‘Switch 2’ was reportedly shown behind closed doors to developers at Gamescom, as Eurogamer’s Tom Phillips has said. According to the report, Nintendo demoed the Switch 2 to “partners,” showing the next-generation specifications of the system by playing a purported “souped up” version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild.
Notably, there has been absolutely no word from Nintendo’s end regarding the launch of its next mainline system—currently referred to as the ‘Switch 2.’ It could, of course, be different, but given the brand that the Nintendo Switch has built for itself, it wouldn’t be surprising for the Japanese gaming giant to stick to the ‘Switch’ moniker and, of course, keep offering a hybrid-style system moving forward.
Eurogamer’s report also aligns with a recent VGC report that suggested Nintendo was showcasing The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 demo on the Switch 2 at Gamescom. According to VGC, the said demo was running using Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology and even had “advanced ray tracing enabled,” which was comparable to the PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles.
VGC had also reported earlier this year that the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch sometime next year in 2024—almost seven years since the original Nintendo Switch hit the shelves. VGC’s sources also stated that the next console will have a portable mode, like the Nintendo Switch—not following in the footsteps of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
The Nintendo Switch—which came out in March 2017—became the third best-selling console of all time in February this year, with total sales of 122.5 million units. It has a huge following thanks to its first-party games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon games, and other classics like Metroid Prime Remastered.
