Varanasi: One person was killed while other was injured after a truck hit a motorcycle near Katesar village under the limits of Mughalsarai police station in Chandauli district on Tuesday.
Angered over the incident, locals blocked the road and staged a violent protest. The vehicle of CO Sadar Anil Rai was damaged while inspector Mughalsarai Brijesh Chandra Tripathi suffered head injuries in brick batting by some protestors.
SP Chandauli Ankur Agrawal said that the truck was seized after arresting the driver and body of the deceased was sent for postmortem. The persons involved in attack on the police were being identified with video footages and stern action would be initiated against them after lodging an FIR, said the SP.
According to police, one Roshan Gupta (40) of Katesar village, who worked at a shop of sweet in Serma area, had left for work on motorcycle of neighbour Lalla Yadav. They were on way when a speeding truck hit their motorcycle. Gupta died on the spot while Yadav suffered grave injuries. Some local natives rushed Yadav to a hospital.
In the meantime, several villagers blocked the road and staged demonstration leading to massive traffic jam on Ramnagar-Padao route. On being informed CO Sadar and inspector Mughalsarai reached Katesar and tried to calm the protesters. However, the protesters indulged in brick batting targeting the policemen and their vehicles.
Inspector Mughalsarai suffered head injuries while the CO’s vehicle was damaged in the attack. Later, police waved canes to disperse the mob. However, the protesters continued to block the road. Later, the SDM Manoj Pathak reached the spot and assured for all possible financial assistance for Gupta’s family after which the villagers called off their stir.
