MP Santokh Chowdhary passed away in Bharat Jodo Yatra: Minister in Punjab Government, won MP elections for the second time from Jalandhar, son also MLA

Congress MP from Jalandhar Chaudhary Santokh Singh died of heart attack during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in an ambulance upon arrival of the attack. Where doctors declared him dead. Soon after receiving the news of his death, Rahul Gandhi left for seeing him, stopping the journey midway.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal informed that at the time this information was received, all of them were waiting for Rahul Gandhi for T-break. As soon as he climbed the stairs, Rahul Gandhi left for the hospital. MP Santokh Singh was the sitting MP from Jalandhar and he was 76 years old. He reached the Lok Sabha in 2019 as a second time MP. Earlier, he had won in 2014.

Political journey of Santokh Singh

  • Standing from Phillaur in the 1992-1992 assembly elections, he won his first victory.
  • In 1997, he was elected General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and remained in this post for about a year.
  • During the Captain Government in 2002-2002, he was assigned the Cabinet Minister Social Security, Women and Child Development, Social Welfare, Medical Education and Research Department. He had won from Phillaur assembly seat.
  • From 2004 -2004 to 2010, he was the Vice President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
  • 2014- Elected to the 16th Lok Sabha after defeating Pawan Kumar Tinu of SAD from Jalandhar constituency.
  • September 1, 2014: Became a member of the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment and Consultative Committee on Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Ministry of Urban Development.
  • 14 August 2014: Became a member of the Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Started political journey as a youth leader
MP Chaudhary started his political journey in 1978 as a Punjab Youth Congress leader. From 1978 to 1982, he was the Senior Vice President of the Punjab Youth Congress. From 1987 to 1995, became the President of the District Congress Committee Rural. Elected as General Secretary of Punjab Congress Legislature Party after registering first victory in 1992.

From 1992 to 1995, in-charge of Rural Development and Panchayats, became the Chief Parliamentary Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs and Power Department. Later he was Cabinet Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Food and Civil Supplies in the Government of Punjab.
