Media should not run betting advertisements: Government issued new advisory; Said- promoting betting is a violation of the law

The Central Government on Thursday issued a new advisory for media institutions regarding the advertisement of betting. The Ministry of Information and Broadcast said in this advisory that media platforms should avoid running betting advertisements. Legal action will be taken if the advisory is not accepted.

The government said – promoting betting is a violation of the law
The government says that betting and gambling are illegal under the law. Avoid promoting it. The government says that if any media platform directly or indirectly advertises betting, it will be considered a violation of the law.

Advertisement of betting platforms illegal
According to the Information Technology (Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, the ministry has said that advertisements of betting platforms are an illegal activity, which cannot be shown on digital media.

The advisory states that the ministry has observed that promotional content and advertisements of betting platforms are still appearing on some news platforms and OTT platforms. Online offshore betting platforms have started using news websites as a surrogate product to advertise.
