Majuli bypoll result: BJP takes lead, poised for victory | Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The BJP is marching ahead of the opposition parties in the Majuli byelection results, indicating a convincing victory for the saffron alliance.
Byelection got necessitated in Majuli after former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal vacated the seat following his induction in the Modi cabinet last year.
As per early updates on Thursday, BJP’s Bhuban Gam got 18,687 votes with a vote share of 71.52 per cent.
Assam Jatiya Parishad nominee Chittaranjan Basumatary is trailing.
Basumatary, who got support of the Congress and other major opposition parties, was confined to 6,525 votes. His vote share has been 24.97 per cent.
Bhaity Richong of SUCI (Communist) has got 477 votes (1.83 per cent vote share).
The final polling percentage in 99-Majuli (ST) assembly constituency was 71.76 per cent.
Three candidates are in fray for byelection where there are total 1,33,227 registered electors.
