From the academic year 2023-24, the Karnataka government has granted permission to conduct Summative Assessment 2 for students in Class 9 and annual examinations for students in Class 11. The Karnataka board presently administers yearly exams to students in classes 10 and 12, as well as assessment tests to students in classes 5 and 8.

The step attempts to help students become better learners by consistently tracking their learning curves across all levels. The school education department has also addressed students’ concerns about being sent to detention if they fail a test.

The Karnataka State Quality Assessment and Accreditation Council (KSQAAC), in accordance with the notification, will publish the question papers for the Class 9 Summative Assessment-2. The relevant Deputy Director of the School Education Department will put it together at the state level and make it accessible to concerned field education officials.

The question papers for class 9 will be emailed to the relevant Block Education Officer’s (BEO) secure online account when the board has finished preparing them at the state level. Question papers for class 11 will be sent to the designated Deputy Director of Pre-University (DDPU). The PU Examination Section of the Karnataka School Examination and Evaluation Board will be preparing the Class 11 Annual Examination question papers at the state level.

In contrast to class 10 and 12, the evaluation of papers for class 9 and 11 yearly examinations will take place at the school and college levels, respectively. Lastly, the Head Masters and Principals will post the test results of the students on the “Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS)” portal.

The notification further adds that a supplementary exam will be held at the relevant university/ college level if the student fails the annual class 11 exam.

The Class 5 and 8 yearly exams were first administered by KSEAB last year.

The Karnataka Board stated earlier this month that it will administer three annual examinations. The state declared that the SSLC and PUC Supplemental Exams will be cancelled. Instead, students will now take three exams annually, with the highest grades from all three exams counting towards retention.
