Sources close to Mourinho, who was sacked by AS Roma in the past month, told Mail Online that the Portuguese’s “ambition is to return to United”.

“Please don’t call me arrogant…but…I’m not one of the bottle. I think I’m a special one.” Not a statement any regular manager would make on their debut appearance in the feared Premier League. But Jose Mourinho was far from a regular manager. He would, in fact, turn out to be ‘The Special One’.

And now, latest reports suggest that Mourinho may possibly be eyeing a move back to the Premier League with Manchester United, to tend to ‘unfinished business’.

Sources close to Mourinho, who was sacked by AS Roma in the past month, told Mail Online that the Portuguese’s “ambition is to return to United”.

They also are quoted as saying, “He feels like he has unfinished business there after how it ended last time and he had made it his mission to go back.”

Jose had coached the Red Devils from 2016 to 2018, a brief period in United’s recent history which saw them clinch silverware under the watchful eye of the Portuguese. With Mourinho, United won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season, and in even more surprising fashion, finished second in the Premier League in the following season.

But, due to unsatisfactory results, he was later sacked in December 2018, halfway into his third season with the Red Devils.

Much has been said about Mourinho and his seemingly pragmatic style of play, but one thing that nobody can argue with is the fact that where Mourinho goes, silverware shall follow.

Except for his stint with the Spurs, Mourinho has won trophies with every single club he has managed.

In fact, Mourinho scripted history with Roma as well in his short tenure with them.

Roma clinched the inaugural Europa Conference League title in 2022, making Mourinho the first manager in history to clinch all three European titles.

“It is one thing to win when everyone expects it… but it is quite another to win when something feels immortal, that feels truly special” were the words that an emotional Jose Mourinho uttered. Perhaps we must remember that there is more to one than meets the eye, especially when it comes to ‘The Special One.’
