JNUSU Elections 2024: Varsity Issues Code Of Conduct Drawing Guidelines For Poll Campaigning

In the wake of the upcoming JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union) Elections 2024, the JNU administration has brought in a code of conduct to overlook the pre-election campaigning. As per the varsity’s code of conduct, the use of posters or any kind of pamphlets without prior permission from the varsity’s election committee shall be prohibited during the election campaign for the upcoming students union polls, as per a notice issued by the university, news agency PTI reported. 

With the upcoming JNUSU elections in light, the JNU students union election committee has issued a partial code of conduct underlying the rules to be followed by different student bodies participating in the elections, during the election campaigning. “The EC is releasing a partial code of conduct for the smooth functioning of the election process. We appeal to the student community to cooperate with the EC so that the elections are held peacefully and in a disciplined manner,” the notice issued on Friday in this regard was reported as saying. 

The notice further stated that use of any kinds of banners or pamphlets during the campaigning period for the upcoming JNUSU elections without prior permission from the Election Committee (EC) that is tasked with overseeing the conduct of JNUSU polls shall be prohibited.

Notably, as per the rules, students and participating organisations are only allowed to use handmade and photocopied material for election campaigning inside the campus. Moreover, students will not be allowed to deface any building  roads, electric polls, bus stops, trees, etc, inside the campus through posters or by using any such medium during the campaigning process, the notice added. 

Moreover, any kind of public meeting for social public meeting for social, culture or political purposes must be held with prior approval from the EC in advance, the rules said. The notice also prohibits students from using public address systems, vehicles and animals for taking out any procession during the election campaigns inside the varsity. Notably, after being last held in 2019, the upcoming JNUSU polls will be held after a gap of four years.
