Jharkhand: Main accused in BJP worker’s murder arrested, mob pelted stones for tree cutting

Police has arrested the main accused of stoning a BJP worker to death and burning the dead body in Simdega district of Jharkhand. The BJP worker had allegedly cut trees illegally, which is against the local tribal traditions.

BJP worker Sanju Pradhan, 32, was first stoned and later burnt his body by a mob 100 meters from his house on January 4. The incident took place in Besarajara market under Kolebira police station area. Village head Subun Bud, the main accused in the case, was arrested on Sunday after a massive search. The total number of arrests in the case has increased to eight. The search is on for the five other accused named in the FIR.

The family of the deceased alleges that the village head had called a meeting before killing the head. Meanwhile, Pradhan was called out of his house and started beating. According to Superintendent of Police Shams Tabrez, additional forces have been deployed to provide security to the family of the deceased and search for the absconding accused. A case has been registered against 13 people named and 25 unidentified people for murder, rioting with deadly weapons and illegal assembly.

The BJP had demonstrated across the district against the killing of its worker. Members of the Bhokta community had blocked roads in Kolebira against the incident. The wife of the deceased alleged that the police officials present at the spot did nothing to save Pradhan, while a mob of 1,000 people involved in the incident prevented them from reaching the spot. The police recovered the burnt body with great difficulty and sent it for postmortem.
