IITs to Opt for ‘Uniformity’ in Recruiter Registration Forms, Open House with Firms to Streamline Placement Process – News18

From keeping “uniformity” in placement registration forms for recruiters at all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to holding an ‘open house’ session with companies, are among key steps that the institutes have decided to adopt. These steps, set to be implemented in the upcoming academic session, enhance consistency in the placement process for students across campuses and ease out mental pressure faced by them during this time of the year, News18 has learnt.

The decisions were taken during an All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) meeting that was held last month at IIT-Mandi. The AIPC has heads of placement cells of each of the 23 IITs as its members, which meets to discuss placement patterns and strategies and lay out common guidelines for recruiters.

According to AIPC members, one of the crucial steps agreed upon is having a uniform placement registration form for all 23 IITs. Recruiting firms coming down to IIT campuses to hire students during the placement season have to first register with the institute to participate in the process.

“As of now, all IITs have different registration forms. However, we have decided to promote uniformity and keep a common registration form for all institutes with a set format and terms and conditions, so that there is no variance, for example, the same firm declaring one pay package to students at a campus and a different one for students at another campus. This will be enforced from the next session. Placements are sensitive and are linked to students’ mental health, so, it’s important that the procedure is even across the board,” said Prof Debjani Mitra of IIT-ISM Dhanbad and convenor of the AIPC.

The IITs also built consensus around having the same reporting pattern for final placement reports bearing statistics that are put out by the institutes once the recruiting season is over. Usually, placements across IITs are wrapped up by June 30. The new academic session starts around July-August.

The committee members also said that they are planning to organise an open house session with industry partners around May or June before the next session starts. “This will probably be the first such open house with companies where students can directly have their queries answered by recruiters. There are issues such as differing or delayed joining dates or offers being revoked for various reasons by companies, which happened at many of the IITs last year. The institute acts as an interface between the recruiter and the student. The open house will give a chance to both students and recruiters to have an open and direct channel for discussion,” said an AIPC member.

The committee also confirmed the decision on the IITs not to declare the highest pay packages offered to students and instead give out only average and median salaries, which was agreed upon in its meeting held in January. The move had come following IIT-Bombay announcing that 85 of its students accepted offers of Rs 1 crore plus in the first phase of placements (December 1-20) last year and later issuing a corrigendum that the number of such offers made was instead 22.

“The decision was made because these kinds of declarations create false expectations among parents and students, as these offers are only a few. These are outliers and most of them are international offers, which are not normalised to Indian currency. It creates an unnecessary stress on students, which must be avoided,” said another committee member.
