Kanpur: The festival of colours was celebrated with fervour and enthusiasm in the industrial city on Friday. As the colour throwing took place on Friday, the festivities continued the weekend as well. Meeting friends and mingling with relatives and neighbours will continue on Sunday as well since people are totally soaked in the spirit of festivity.
Since the state government had declared Holiday on Friday and Saturday, the denizens got three days to celebrate the festival. People of all ages—the retirees and the office-goers, college students to young professionals, women and children—everyone enjoyed playing with colours and wishing each other ‘Happy Holi’. The ‘Holika Dahen’ was carried out past midnight on Thursday. The devotees performed puja after following all necessary rituals. After ‘Holika Dahen’, people danced to the tunes of popular Bollywood and Punjabi numbers. Since the early morning hours on Friday, people played colour. Kids used toy guns to sprinkle colour on each other while their parents used ‘gulal’ to smear each other’s face. The kids were most excited since they got toys which could sprinkle colour and water. The colour throwing stopped only after the day time. In the evening on Friday, people had a good time as they visited the homes of their relatives where they relished ‘Gujiyas’ and ‘papad’. Meeting and greeting people on Holi continued on Saturday. There was a huge rush at the city’s malls and at the multiplexes to watch the film ‘The Kashmir Files’. Since the local markets were closed, people flocked to malls where they dined and shopped. before marking the end of the day.
