The Calcutta High Court on Monday proposed to hold the polling for the Bengal Panchayat elections on July 14 instead of July 8. The court suggested extending the date for filing nominations from June 15 to June 18 and the date for withdrawal of nominations from June 26 to June 27.

On this, the counsel appearing for the State Election Commission said that it is not right to extend the date of nomination. It can be extended from June 15 to June 16 at the most.

What arguments were given in the court today?
The counsel appearing on behalf of the State Election Commission said in the court-
It is not right to extend the date of enrollment. To explain this, he gave an example of the process of getting a child admitted in a school. He said- Suppose I am going to get admission of my child in the school.

I know what documents are required for this. I cannot claim extra time for this. Enrollment can be extended from June 15 to June 16.

The Chief Justice told the commission- You are giving 4 hours a day for enrolment, but even this time is not enough. In response, the commission said that four hours time is being given, that is, the nomination will not stop till that time. Only the door closes after 4 hours, the candidate entering the campus till 3 pm will be able to file nomination.

BJP lawyer Enrollment is being done only for 4 hours a day. There is 5 days time for nomination, in which 73 thousand candidates have to file nomination. Accordingly, a candidate is not getting even an average of 40 seconds to file nomination.

Commission’s lawyer- Our hands are tied by the law. We are committed to conduct free and fair elections.

chief Justice- We are aware of the fair election of the commission, so that voters can vote peacefully. You have a lot of power. Has the CCTV been videographed? Paramilitary can also help the state police. It will be beneficial if the central force comes, because if all the police of the state go to vote, then what will happen to the law and order of the state?

The Election Commission announced the election date on June 8.
The State Election Commission had announced the date of the election on 8 June. State Election Commissioner Rajeev Sinha told that the elections will be held in a single phase. Candidates can file their nominations from Friday till June 15. The counting of votes will take place on July 11.
