Elderly father tortured for property, youngest son and daughter-in-law detained by High Court

After the death of the old father, the Calcutta High Court rejected the bail of the youngest son and daughter-in-law in the case of the eldest son. Justice Vivek Chowdhury directed the accused son and daughter-in-law to surrender in the lower court. Police have been ordered to arrest them for disobeying the order.

According to court sources, Manindranath Sanyal, 77, lived alone in his house at Saroj Park in Barasat. His wife died 14 years ago. The eldest son of a scientist by profession, Mrinmoy Sanyal lives in America. The youngest son and grandmother of the old man live in Baruipur. A year ago, the old man complained that his younger son and grandmother were abusing him for property. They came from Baruipur and stole things from his house. He even alleged that Rs 6 lakh had been taken from his bank account by forging his signature. The old man lodged a complaint with Barasat police station in September 2021. In this context, the police filed a case against the youngest son and daughter-in-law under multiple sections including theft and threats. The accused got bail from Barasat court in the same month.

The old man alleged that his son Bauma had increased the level of torture on the old man since he was granted bail. He lodged another complaint with Barasat police station in February this year. The police filed a case under multiple sections including beating. The accused got bail in the second phase from Barasat court in the same month. The old man then approached the Calcutta High Court to escape the tyranny of his son and daughter-in-law. The High Court banned the accused boy from entering the old man’s house. It is alleged that the old man continued to be tortured for disobeying that order. Even police officers were accused of harassment against the accused boy Baumar. The old man then approached the High Court to deny them bail. The old man died in February this year during the trial.

His eldest son Mrinmoy Sanyal returned from America after receiving the news of his father’s death. It was alleged that his younger brother and grandmother also harassed him. He rushed to the High Court in his father’s case. He continued to sue in the High Court for justice for the torture of his father. At the hearing, Justice Vivek Chowdhury summoned the investigating officer along with the case diary. The judge said that the behavior of the accused after getting bail was not satisfactory. He ordered to cancel their bail. Regarding the verdict, the plaintiff’s lawyers Rudra Prasad Sinha and Shaila Afrin said, “Even though the main plaintiff died, he got justice in his son’s fight.” The accused eventually went to jail. The court’s order will increase people’s confidence in the judiciary.
