Covid-19: Five more Omicron cases in Karnataka, tally 19; clusters in Shivamogga and Udupi | Hubballi News – Times of India

BENGALURU: Karnataka reported five more Covid-19 cases of Omicron variant on Monday, taking the state tally to 19, according to health minister K Sudhakar.
Health officials said the patients had mild symptoms and none of them had recent travel history or contact with international travellers. Four of the newly infected are women. All the five were fully vaccinated.
A 54-year-old woman from Dharwad; a 20-year-old woman student from Bhadravathi in Shivamogga; an 82-yearold man and a 73-year-old woman from the same family in
Udupi, and a 19-year-old girl from Mangaluru were the new Omicron-infected patients.
The Bhadravathi college student tested positive on December 6. Of the 218 contacts who took the test, 26 are positive for Covid. “The reports of genomic sequencing are awaited,” said a health officer. This was the first Omicron case detected in Shivamogga.
The cases from Udupi and Mangaluru were part of the clusters which were sent for genomic sequencing, which confirmed the presence of Omicron.
New strain found in six districts
In the Udupi cluster, an 11 yearold-boy tested positive in the last week of November. Following that, four primary contacts were tested and three turned Covid positive. Their samples were sent for genomic sequencing,” said a health officer.
The Dharwad woman — the first case of Omicron in the district — tested positive for Covid on December 5. She was treated in home isolation and is relieved from symptoms at present, as per the health department’s release. She had four primary contacts and 133 secondary contacts, who all tested negative for Covid-19.
Now, Omicron has been detected in six districts of Karnataka: Bengaluru, Belagavi, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Dharwad and Shivamogga. The first two cases of Omicron in India were reported from Karnataka on December 2 .
