A fresh plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government from appointing a Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Other Election Commissioners (EC). The appointment of two Election Commissioners by the government, expected later this week.
The plea filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur alleges that the new law on the appointment of CEC and ECs is against free and fair elections.
The plea further states that there’s urgency in the matter as Lok Sabha polls might be announced anytime soon and one Election Commissioner– Arun Goel– has already resigned.
