Expert View: Religion does not change just by making an affidavit
According to Bhopal’s lawyer Yawar Khan, it is necessary to make an affidavit to change religion. It has to be attached to the notary. After this, information about conversion has to be given in two national dailies. To register officially, an application has to be made in the gazette office. Every state has its own gazette office. Usually this work is done from collector offices. It takes several documents and passport size photographs. The family bears testimony. The reason for changing religion is asked.

According to lawyer Yawar Khan, the collector can also get the police to investigate whether religious conversion is being done under greed or pressure. After applying, the government process takes up to 60 days to complete. The new name gets recorded in the gazette along with the religion. As soon as the name changed in the Gazette, you have officially joined the religion of your choice.
