The Election Commission has intensified preparations for the elections to 117 assembly seats in Punjab. The country’s Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra arrived in Chandigarh to take stock of the election preparations. After the marathon meeting, he warned the officers of Punjab that whoever indulges in favoritism or does not act in a manner that he will not be on election duty.

Talking to reporters in Chandigarh, Chandra said that he had seen all the DCs, Police Commissioners and SSPs of Punjab in the 4-hour meeting. We have come to know who is how fit. Therefore, the commission will take every step for fear-free and peaceful elections in Punjab. For this, after discussing with the DGP and police officers, a decision will be taken on calling companies of central security forces soon.

Linking Aadhaar with voter card will end duplication

Chief Election Commissioner Chandra said that the linking of voter card with Aadhaar card will eliminate duplication. He said that at present there are 93.17 crore voters in the country. Many times if someone is transferred, then the vote remains in his old and new place. It is not that he casts his vote in two places but the voter list is completely mess free, so linking of Aadhar card will make it easier to delete the duplicate vote. He said that it will not be possible in this election but as soon as its law is made, the commission will start linking.

Women power in Punjab, this time more than 1 crore women voters

He told that this time in Punjab, out of the total 2.2 crore voters, there will be more than 1 crore women voters. This time the ratio of female and male voters has also improved. In the last election, there were 898 women behind one thousand male voters, which has increased to 902 this time. However, the final list will come on January 5.

Apart from this, there will be 1 lakh 40 thousand 835 Divyang voters this time. There will be 57 booths in Punjab where only handicapped employees will perform the duty of polling. Apart from these, 5 lakh 16 thousand 567 voters are above 80 years of age. According to their convenience, the commission will make arrangements for them to cast their vote at home or in the polling booth.

Apart from this, there are 1 lakh 11 thousand 941 service voters. This time there will be 1 lakh 72 thousand 608 first time voters in Punjab. Apart from this, there will be 2 lakh 74 thousand 177 first time voters, that is, between 18 and 19 years of age.

Election Commission worried about low voter turnout

The commission expressed concern over the low voter turnout in Punjab. The Chief Election Commissioner said that a meeting has been held with the district election officers in this regard. The voter turnout in the 2017 election was 77.4% but in the 2019 election it was 65.96%. This time 500 polling booths with less polling have been selected. Where people will be made aware and motivated to vote.

Punjab has 83 general seats, 34 SC reserved

Elections will be held on 117 seats in Punjab. Of these, 83 general and 34 seats will be reserved for SC. Precautions related to Kovid will be followed. There will be thermal scanning of every voter. Booths will also be sanitized. Apart from this, to reduce the crowd at the booth, only 1200 votes will be cast at a booth instead of 1500.
