The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a notification defining the percentage calculation criterion for Class 10 and 12 board exams. According to the examination bye-laws, no overall division, distinction, or aggregate will be granted to students in classes 10 and 12.

Dr Sanyam Bharadwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, issued an official press statement after receiving requests to inform the criteria for determining the percentage of students taking the Board exams.

“No overall division/distinction/aggregate will be awarded as per sub-section 40.1 (iii) of Chapter -7 of the Examination Bye-Laws,” the board stated.

The CBSE further stated that if an applicant has opted for more than five subjects, the choice to select the top five subjects rests with the accepting institution or employer. It was also stated in the announcement that the Board does not calculate/inform/declare the percentage of marks, which may be done by the admitting institution or employer if it is necessary for higher education or employment.

The notification was put forward in response to several people who were challenging the standards for determining the percentage of students who passed the board’s exams.

Earlier this year, the CBSE opted not to publish any student merit lists when announcing the results of the class 10 and 12 board exams. In addition, no class 10 or 12 toppers had been notified by the board. The board stated in the CBSE result announcement that the decision not to release the CBSE toppers list and merit list was made to prevent unhealthy competition between students.

The board previously announced that exams for students in classes 10 and 12 will begin on February 15.

In the meantime, students who want to sit for the board exams in 2024 are anxiously awaiting the official date sheet for the class 10 and class 12 exams to be released by CBSE. Winter-bound CBSE schools have already begun practical tests, while regular schools across the country and overseas will conduct their practical exams in January 2024. The Secondary School Examination and Senior Secondary School board exams are set to conclude on April 10 over a roughly 55-day duration.
