‘Bulli Bai’ Case: App Creator’s Bail Plea Dismissed, 2 Other Accused Sent To Judicial Custody

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday dismissed the bail application of ‘Bulli Bai’ app creator Neeraj Bishnoi while a local court in Mumbai remanded accused Shweta Singh and Mayank Rawat to 14-day judicial custody.

The app had recently drawn widespread outrage as it put out details of more than 100 prominent Muslim women allowing users to participate in an ‘auction’ of those women.

The Delhi Court rejected Neeraj Bishnoi’s bail plea noting that a vilification campaign against Muslim women containing derogatory content and offending material having communal overtones was run on this app, news agency PTI reported.

Neeraj Bishnoi’s Bail Plea Rejected

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma refused to extend the relief saying ‘Bulli Bai’ app creator Neeraj Bishnoi’s act was affront to the dignity of the women of particular community as well as communal harmony of the society.

“The facts disclose that the accused created the app ‘Bulli Bai’ where women journalists and celebrities of a particular community who are famous on social media are targeted and they are projected in a bad light with an objective to insult and humiliate them by objectification,” the court noted, as quoted by PTI.

It further noted that a vilification campaign against these women containing derogatory content and offending material having communal overtones was run on this app being made by the accused.

“The act of the accused is apparently an affront to the dignity of the women of particular community and communal harmony of the society,” the judge said.

As per PTI, the twenty-year-old accused told the court that he was falsely accused and has nothing to do with the offence.

The counsel for the complainant opposed the bail application, contending that the photographs of some prominent Muslim women were picked in order to insult and outrage their modesty by making sexually coloured remarks.

Neeraj Bishnoi, a resident of the Digambar area of Jorhat district in Assam, studied B Tech student at the Vellore Institute of Technology, Bhopal.

He was arrested earlier this month by Delhi Police Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit team from Assam for the alleged involvement in the Bulli Bai case. Other accused include Vishal Kumar Jha, an engineering student from Bengaluru, Shweta Singh from Uttarakhand, and Mayank Rawal.

Shweta Singh & Mayank Rawat Sent To 14-Day Judicial Custody

A local court in Mumbai on Friday remanded Shweta Singh and Mayank Rawat to 14-day judicial custody, while the former claimed that she was slapped during interrogation.

Earlier this month, Mumbai police arrested both the accused from Uttrakhand in connection with the ‘Bulli Bai’ app case.

Shweta Singh (18) and Mayank Rawat (21) also filed their bail applications soon after the magistrate’s court in suburban Bandra remanded them to judicial custody, PTI reported.

Metropolitan Magistrate Komalsing Rajput sent them to jail after being informed that Mayank had tested positive for coronavirus.

Earlier this week, Vishal Jha, the first accused to be arrested in the matter, and the investigating officer in the case had also tested COVID positive.

On Friday, the prosecution informed the court that Vishal Jha and Mayank Rawat were being treated at a COVID-19 care centre in Mumbai’s Kalina area.

Meanwhile, Shweta Singh’s advocate alleged before the court that the accused was slapped during interrogation.

The magistrate’s court directed the police to inquire into the alleged incident.

The hearing on the bail applications, filed by the three accused arrested in Mumbai, has been listed to take place on January 17. The prosecution has been directed to file its response to their pleas by then.
