Hearing was held in the Supreme Court today on the petition against the decision of the Yogi government to bulldozer action in Uttar Pradesh. During the hearing, arguments were made on behalf of both the parties. While Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government side, has justified this action, the petitioner’s lawyer CU Singh has demanded a stay on it. After the hearing, the Supreme Court directed the Yogi government to strictly follow the process of law in removing unauthorized structures. Along with this, the Supreme Court has sought a reply from the UP government and Prayagraj and Kanpur Development Authority in this matter within three days. The Supreme Court said that everything should look fair. Now this petition will be heard next week.

At the same time, senior advocate CU Singh, appearing for the petitioners, told the Supreme Court that the reason given for the demolition was that action was being taken against the protesters involved in the violence. Singh further argued that the demolition that happens again and again is shocking and appalling. It was not during the Emergency, not during the pre-independence era. These are the houses standing for more than 20 years and sometimes they do not belong to the accused but also their aged parents, they argue.

No specific community is being targeted: Government side
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government, says that none of the affected parties filed a petition in the Supreme Court in the Jahangirpuri demolition case. He said that notice had already been given by the UP government. No wrong action was taken against anyone. The government is not targeting any particular community.
