Amitabh Bachchan Undergoes Angioplasty: Know What Is Angioplasty All About

Amitabh Bachchan has undergone an angioplasty at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai and was admitted to the hospital on Friday morning. As per media reports, he was attending events and experienced discomfort, due to which he was taken to hospital for a routine checkup, where doctors recommended the operation.

What Is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a medical procedure used for widening a narrowed artery containing plaque deposits. During this process, a small balloon is utilised by medical professionals to push the plaque against the walls of the artery, allowing blood to flow freely. Additionally, a stent or tube may be inserted into the newly expanded area to maintain its openness. Individuals suffering from coronary artery disease or those who have experienced a heart attack may require coronary angioplasty.

How Is Angioplasty Done?

As per a report by Medical News Today, in a typical angioplasty procedure, the physician makes a small cut in the groin or wrist and introduces a tube, known as a catheter, into an artery. Subsequently, the catheter is carefully maneuvered upwards and into the specific blood vessel near the heart that requires treatment. Usually, the catheter is equipped with an inflatable balloon designed to push aside the plaque or clot, effectively widening the artery.

To aid in the navigation of the catheter and evaluation of the arteries requiring treatment, doctors utilise real-time X-rays and a contrast dye. In comparison to heart surgery, angioplasty is considered minimally invasive since it does not necessitate opening up the chest.

Risks Involved:

Angioplasty is generally considered a safe procedure with few complications. One estimate suggests that the complication rate is around 5 in every 100 individuals, with fewer complications reported in larger institutions specializing in angioplasty.

Although complications from angioplasty are infrequent, they may include:

  1. Prolonged bleeding from the insertion site of the catheter in the groin or wrist
  2. Damage to blood vessels, kidneys, or arteries
  3. Allergic reaction to the dye used during the procedure
  4. Chest pain
  5. Arrhythmia, which refers to an abnormal heart rhythm
  6. Blockage requiring emergency bypass
  7. Blood clot formation
  8. Stroke
  9. Heart attack
  10. Tear or damage to the artery or major blood vessel
  11. Fatality

Older individuals and those with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, multiple blocked arteries, or chronic kidney disease, are at a higher risk of complications from angioplasty.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Big B, was recently shooting for Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
