New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bhavya Bishnoi secured the Adampur seat in Haryana’s Hisar in today’s by-election defeating Congress’ Jai Prakash.

Bishnoi, the grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, led the contest early on with 17,633 votes while former Union minister, a three-time MP from Hisar and two-time MLA Jai Prakash got 11, 398 votes in the initial tally. The counting of votes began in Adampur on Sunday morning at 8 am.
The by-poll which took place on November 4 and saw a voter turnout of 75.25 per cent. It was necessitated after former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal’s younger son Kuldeep Bishnoi resigned as MLA and switched sides from BJP to Congress.
The main parties which contested the polls were the BJP, Congress, Indian National Lok Dal, and Aam Aadmi Party. The INLD has nominated Congress rebel Kurda Ram Nambardar while the AAP fielded Satender Singh, who switched over from the BJP.
With Bhavya Bishnoi’s win, the Bhajan Lal family retains the family bastion of five decades.
By-elections were held on November 3 for seven assembly constituencies in six states — Gopalganj and Mokama in Bihar, Andheri (East) of Maharashtra, Munugode of Telangana, Gola Gokarannath of Uttar Pradesh, and Dhamnagar of Odisha.
From Bihar’s Mokama seat, Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Neelam Devi defeated BJP’s Sonam Devi with 16 thousand votes.
Among the seven seats which witnessed a stiff contest between the BJP and the regional parties, the saffron party had held three and the Congress two, while the Shiv Sena and the RJD had one each.
