Hubballi: Vaccination for children in the age group of 12-14 years began on Wednesday with Corbevax shots.
The Dharwad district administration has identified 72,695 students for vaccination and has received 45,000 shots.
Deputy commissioner Nitesh Patil and CEO Suresh Itnal launched the vaccination at the district hospital here on Wednesday.
According to a source from the health department, Corbevax is a protein subunit of the Covid-19 vaccine and was developed by Biological E. Limited in Hyderabad.
Two shots will be administered at the gap of 28 days. The education department has to vaccinate all the children in the district within a week. “The vaccine will be given in schools if holidays are not declared. Many schools are conducting annual exams so we have planned to hold a vaccination drive in the district hospital today. Twenty children were vaccinated at the inauguration programme,” Dharwad district health officer BC Karigoudar said.
Patil said the department aimed to vaccinate all children. The education department and educational institutions should be actively involved in making the vaccination drive a success, he said.
Itnal said vaccine registration has been completed in schools and “we are awaiting orders from the government to conduct drives in schools”.
Priya Kundagol, a Class 7 student at HPS Kannada School, said: “I took the vaccine without any fear as it will help me to fight against Covid-19. I am aware that vaccination helps in increasing immunity.” Another student, Vedika Bochagerisaid: “I took the vaccine today. I will also motivate my friends in school to take the jab.”
