While Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement at the India Mobile Congress 2023, it is believed that these 100 5G labs will play a crucial role in upskilling local innovators, students, and startups, fostering the development of a new generation of applications tailored to the country’s needs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the establishment of 100 5G labs across India that will serve as testing and breeding grounds for local innovators, students, and startups to develop a new range of applications in various sectors. This initiative unveiled at the India Mobile Congress 2023 will have a transformative impact on India’s technological landscape, officials say.

Speaking at the event, Modi emphasised the importance of India becoming a thought leader in technology, noting past successes such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the Covid-19 vaccination platform, CoWIN. He stated, “This is such a time that we, along with excellent adopters and implementers of technology, must become thought leaders in all sectors. India has the power of a young demographic and a vibrant democracy. I want to invite all the IMC participants, especially the youth, to come forward, and I will be with you.”

India has made remarkable strides in digital public infrastructure, with achievements such as 1.76 crore farmers registered on eNAM, transactions worth Rs 15.76 lakh crore via UPI, and 16.6 crore patients served via eSanjeevani, among others. These milestones highlight India’s digital prowess on the world stage.

One of the most significant announcements was that 5G technology will be accessible to over 100 million Indians, thanks to the establishment of more than 3.74 lakh 5G towers across 735 districts, as per government data. India now stands among the five countries to deploy their own 5G stack, leading the way for the world.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, union minister of communications and IT, outlined the plan for the 100 5G labs initiative. He said that in these labs, students, professors, and MSMEs will have the opportunity to use different types of 5G technology in sectors like health, agriculture, and manufacturing to create innovative products and startups. Each lab will consist of a minimum of 10 professors, 50 students, and 10 MSMEs, while bigger labs will involve even more participants.

The selected engineering institutions for these labs are spread across various states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, and others.

It is believed that these 100 5G labs will play a crucial role in upskilling local innovators, students, and startups, fostering the development of a new generation of applications tailored to the country’s needs. Here are the names of the 100 institutions selected to host the 5G labs:
