Witchcraft: 70-year-old girl beaten to death, suspected of witchcraft

In Jharkhand’s Garhwa district, a 70-year-old woman was thrown out of her house and thrashed to death. The people of the village claim that she used to practice witchcraft.
The Garhwa police said on Tuesday that the incident took place in Khuri village of Chinia police station area. One person has been taken into custody for questioning. The woman’s family has alleged in a complaint that around 8.30 pm on Sunday night, five men dragged her from the house, took her about 200 meters away and beat her to death with sticks.
A police officer said that his body has been sent for postmortem. Murder on suspicion of witchcraft is a major social evil of Jharkhand. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 590 people died on suspicion of witchcraft between 2001 and 2020. Most of these were women.
