Wimbledon 2022, 1st Round Summary: Underdogs On Song As Rune, Felix Crash Out

Wimbledon 2022: The first round of Wimbledon 2022 came to an end on Tuesday with a mixed bag of results. Holger Rune (24), the Danish teen sensation that took their game to next level during this year’s French Open, witnessed his dream run come to an end as he got outclassed by unseeded Marcos Giron of the US in straight sets. Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Canadian World No. 6, also crashed out at the hands of an unseeded Maxime Cressy of the US.

Rafael Nadal (2) saw over the tough challenge placed on the platter by Argentine Francisco Cerundolo as he won his match in 4 sets. Tsitsipas (4) too didn’t have an easy time as Ritschard put on a brilliant effort to deny Tsitsipas an easy win. Elsewhere, Fritz (11), Roberto Bautista (17), Schwartzman (12), De Minaur (19) made sure there were no more upsets for top seeds as they won their respective matches comprehensively and by straight sets.

However, there is a certain panic about the spread of Covid-19 as Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini pulled out of Wimbledon 2022 after testing positive for Covid-19. It comes as a piece of dreadful news for Cilic who was on an impressive run as he was dominant in the French Open (knocking out favourite and World No.1 Daniil Medvedev en route).

It is disappointing for Berrettini as well as he fell just short of the Grand Slam title last year as he ended up as runner-up to Novak Djokovic. Players have reportedly started being cautious and taking necessary preventive measures.
