Why Shatrughan Sinha Rejected Manmohan Desai’s 1977 Film Parvarish – News18

Shatrughan Sinha said in an interview that he wanted to shrug off the supporting actor image he had prior to 1975.

Manmohan Desai was one of the critically acclaimed filmmakers in the Indian cinema. He will be remembered for directing blockbuster hits like Naseeb, Suhaag, Parvarish, etc. Parvarish marked the first collaboration of Manmohan Desai and Amitabh Bachchan. It was filmed alongside Amar Akbar Anthony and performed well at the box office.

The film is also remembered for a revelation by the actor Shatrughan Sinha. According to IMDb, Shatrughan Sinha claimed that he was offered Vinod’s role after Rajesh Khanna left the film. Shatrughan said that he, however, was going through a transition period and did not want to act in multistarrer films. According to him, he wanted to prove his acting credentials, as a solo hero and this is why he rejected the offer to act in Parvarish. Shatrughan Sinha added that he wanted to shrug off the supporting actor image he had prior to 1975. Parvarish was released on November 11, 1977.

According to IMDb, there were reports that Rajesh Khanna was offered the film. Kaka, as he was popularly known however, insisted that he would play the role of Daku’s biological son. Manmohan Desai did not want this and he was frustrated with Rajesh Khanna’a tantrums. Reportedly, he had called Vinod Khanna, to report to the muhurat of the film. Vinod arrived on the decided day and agreed to essay the role in the film without even asking what his role and the script were.

The rest as well known is history. Parvarish was a hit film at the box office. This film revolved around a bandit Mangal Singh (Amjad Khan), who was apprehended by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shamsher Singh (Shammi Kapoor). The DSP adopts Mangal’s child and names him Amit (Amitabh Bachchan). How Amit gets to know about his real father and what happens next forms the core theme of this film.

Neetu Singh, Shabana Azmi, Kader Khan, Dev Kumar, Heena Kausar and others have acted in Parvarish as well. The songs of this film also resonate with the audience besides an excellent storyline and great acting performances.

These songs were Band Aankh Se Dekh Tamasha, Jaate Ho Jaane Jaana, Hum Premi Prem Karna Jaane, and others. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and others had provided vocals to these numbers.
