NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY HISTORY: THE RAMAN EFFECT
In 1928, CV Raman made a groundbreaking discovery: the Raman Effect, also known as Raman scattering. This phenomenon involves the inelastic scattering of photons by matter, meaning they exchange energy and change direction. This remarkable achievement earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
To commemorate this scientific triumph, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed to the Indian government in 1986 that February 28 be designated as National Science Day (NSD). This proposal was accepted, and since then, India has celebrated NSD annually on this date, recognizing the importance of scientific progress and honouring its brilliant scientific minds.
