There may be an increase in the water level of Beas and Sutlej rivers in Punjab today and tomorrow i.e. on Thursday. In fact, the Bhakra Dam management has decided to release about 55 cusecs of water from Pong Dam and Bhakra Dam for the next two days. There is no concern in the areas around Beas, but when water is released in Sutlej, there may be problems in the low-lying areas.

It is a matter of concern that the Meteorological Department has also issued an alert for normal rain in West Malwa today and rain in entire Punjab on Thursday. If there is more rain than normal, then there may be a problem in West Malwa. According to the issued warning, 20 thousand cusecs of water is to be released from Pong Dam at 10 am today and 35 thousand cusecs of water from Bhakra Dam at 10 am on Thursday.

Train movement has been affected due to floods. Langar was arranged at Amritsar railway station by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

Water will be released from Shahnehar Barrage Dam in Beas
Water can be released from Pong Dam to Shahnehar Barrage Dam. Its maximum water carrying capacity is 11500 cusecs, but an additional 8500 cusecs of water will be released here. After which water can be released from the Shahnehar Barrage Dam in the Beas River.

However, there is no need to panic here. Beas still has the capacity to store 80 thousand cusecs of water. But despite this, caution has been asked at the concerned places.

Concern will increase due to increase in water level in Sutlej
Bhakra Dam is going to release 35 thousand cusecs of water through turbines. On Thursday, the dam will increase the flow of water in Sutlej. Presently 19 thousand cusecs of water is being released from Bhakra. Keeping in view the situation, additional 16 thousand cusecs of water will be released here. According to the information given by the Bhakra management, the water will have to be released downstream from the Nangal dam.

In this, a total of about 30,000 cusecs of water is to be released in the Sutlej river, including Nakkian and Lohand escape and water coming out of Ropar thermal plant. In addition, due to local ravines between Bhakra and Nangal Dam, the discharge downstream of Nangal Dam may increase by about 5,000 cusecs for a short period, which fall into Nangal Tank due to rainfall.

Due to sudden closure and breakage of Bhakra Main Line and Nangal Hydal Channel, keeping in view the present situation in Punjab, the water in the lower canal may have to be increased above 30 thousand cusecs in the downstream of Lohand for a certain period. Further, due to difficulty in opening of gates of Sri Anandpur Sahib Hydal Channel and Nangal Hydal Channel or any other fault, the discharge in Sutlej river downstream of Nangal may increase for short duration to overcome the emerging situation.
