Tribals and non-tribals clashed during the march: Police
According to the police, thousands of people took part in the march, during which violence broke out between tribals and non-tribals. The Army and the Assam Rifles were called in to quell the escalating violence. Army and Assam Rifles also conducted a flag march to keep the situation under control.

Around 7,500 people have been sheltered in army camps and government offices in several areas of the state following the violence.

Learn about the Meitei Community
The Meitei community is a non-tribal community. It accounts for 53% of the population of Manipur. Mainly the people of this community live in the Manipur Valley. They claim that illegal immigration is being done on a large scale by people from Myanmar and Bangladesh, due to which they are facing problems. As per the existing law, the Meitei people are not allowed to settle in the hilly areas of the state.
