Counter-Strike 2 doesn’t support macOS, and Valve has explained why, citing several reasons. Here are all the details about Valve’s latest Counter-Strike game.
Last month, we finally saw the release of the much-anticipated Counter-Strike 2, but one major thing that was different—apart from all the upgrades the game brings over CS:GO—is the fact that it isn’t supported on macOS. So, last month, when players installed Counter-Strike 2 or updated the CS:GO app on macOS, they found that the new Counter-Strike 2 was no longer playable.
Valve has since confirmed that Counter-Strike will only support 64-bit Windows and Linux, and that it makes no sense for the company to support the game on macOS. They have even dropped support for 32-bit versions of the game. “As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems,” Valve explained. Similarly, the company won’t offer Counter-Strike 2 for macOS as well.
In the grand scheme of things, these platforms account for less than 1% of active CS:GO players, and this is why Counter-Strike 2 will exclusively support 64-bit Windows and Linux, Valve said in a Steam FAQ.
For those players who have a CS:GO Prime account and spent the vast majority of their time playing the game on macOS, they will be eligible for refunds until December 1. Moreover, the players also must have played the game between the time Counter-Strike 2’s Limited Test was announced and the time it was launched.
It is also notable that users won’t be able to play CS:GO directly by downloading from Steam, but the company has allowed for a workaround. You can install a ‘legacy’ version of the game by going to the Properties of the game in your Steam Library and then looking for ‘csgo_legacy.’ This way, users can still play the old game.
