Cervical cancer cases are the second highest in India after breast cancer. Every year more than 1 lakh women fall prey to this disease. But a vaccine can keep this dangerous disease away. This is called the HPV vaccine.

If girls get this vaccine before the start of periods, then the chances of getting cervical cancer are very less. This vaccine is necessary for all girls. First of all let us tell you what is cervical cancer?

Virus can enter the body during intercourse

Dr Ruma Satwik, a gynecologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, told Woman Bhaskar that cervical cancer is caused by a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is a sexually transmitted infection that enters the body during intercourse. This virus affects the cells of the cervix.

But not every HPV virus is responsible for cancer. There are many types of this virus. High-risk viruses can cause cervical cancer, but it also depends on the body’s immunity. If the immunity is strong then its risk can be reduced.

Cervical cancer from HPV 16 and 18

Not all types of human papilloma virus (HPV) cause cervical cancer. There are 100 types of HPV virus but only 18 are high risk viruses. HPV 16 and 18 are the causes of cervical cancer.

It is okay to vaccinate for 11 to 15 years

Cervical cancer is spread by the human papilloma virus, so vaccines are given to prevent it. Doctor Ruma Satwik told that to avoid this disease, HPV vaccine is administered to girls in teenage. The correct age for planting it is 11 to 15 years. Every parent should give this dose to their daughter.

2 doses to 15 year old girls

Girls up to the age of 15 years are given 2 doses. After taking 1 dose, the second dose is taken after 6 months. If the age is more than 15 years, 3 doses are given. After taking one dose, the second dose is given after 1 month and the third dose is given after 6 months.

Get it done before being sexually active

The right time to apply this vaccine is when the girl is not sexually active. Girls do not even start their periods at a young age. Since cervical cancer can be caused by having a relationship, girls should be given its dose at an early age so that in future they do not get any unwanted virus from their partner. Even if found, it should not have any effect on the cervix.

According to the Food and Drug Administration in the US, the HPV vaccine can be given from age 9 to 45 years.

Married women also get the vaccine

Dr Ruma Satwik said that even married women are given its dose. She says that usually we assume that a woman has only one sexual partner throughout her life. Therefore, the risk of sexually transmitted infection in them is zero. We don’t test them. We assume that the woman does not necessarily have an infection. Or if there is an infection, it is not necessary that it is the virus. At the same time, if there is the same virus, then this vaccine gives protection from other infections.

Pap test is necessary even after getting the vaccine

The HPV vaccine is completely safe. But even after this, it is necessary to do a Pap test. Through this test, the cervix is examined and cancer is detected.
